Behind-the-scenes with designer Nina Brown

The journey of Nina, a designer into the cultural sector

Web designer Nina Brown Design is responsible for revamping the diagonal dance newest website. She tells us a bit more about her journey until meeting us, how she remains inspired by the dynamics of the cultural sector and how she works with clients.

2020 was a difficult year for many. I have been running my own web designer’s business since 2014, eventually niching into the cultural sector in 2019, the generosity of this sector never ceases to amaze me, folks give away their knowledge freely and openly, but like many in this sector, 2020 presented a challenging time.

I found myself looking more toward social media as a way of advertising, to continue to grow my audience. I had previously been averse to social media, finding it a necessary evil, showing up once or twice a year! I was unsure what to post, how to post, where to post, and if I would even post anything interesting. As work was quieter, I decided to use my time learning the craft, I attended online courses, picked the brains of friends, and set up meetings with colleagues who seemed to have this skill down. I soon discovered much to my delight, that the key to success in social media has clear parallels with the sector I have come to love so much.

It doesn’t have to be super spammy, it’s not about showing off and bragging about your achievements. It’s about connection, collaboration, sharing your authentic self and finding your true audience, sharing your expertise openly, and for free and in return you get to meet like-minded people.

As I came towards this epiphany at the end of 2020, I was introduced to Diagonal Dance. A friend mentioned that they were looking for a web designer, so naturally I had little search for them on the internet, and was so delighted to find that not only were they doing social media regularly, but that they were doing it really, really well. I was so inspired again, by this wonderful generosity of information and knowledge, shared openly and for their commitment to creating a space for those in the dance sector to come and learn, and improve their marketing skills

I was thrilled to work with them and hope that I have created a site that showcases their potential and generosity. They are clearly exceptionally skilled in marketing, and side note, really lovely people to work with.
